Learning how to plant daylily seeds is simple. It takes some knowledge of what is needed and a little time and patience. These beautiful flowers are fairly new as a vegetable, but many gardeners have found that they are quite easy to grow. They don’t need much care and require very little upkeep. The tulip family includes many different varieties. One of the newest introductions to the garden has been the orange daylily. The flowers range from white to orange with red accents and petals that range from creamy whiteness to a slightly purplish tint. These long-lasting blooms have a pleasant tropical scent and look great in arrangements or on their own. They do not have true flowers but rather stemless, vine-like branches that have small flowers dangling in the center. The plant derives its name from the Latin root of the verb to cross, “to cross.” This ability to grow in various climates allows it to be a perfect specimen plant for anyone who is willing to take the time and effort to care for it. It is a perennial that must be divided every year.
To get started, bring pots in to your garden or potting shed. Remove any grass or weeds and trim back the roots. The best way to know if a plant needs fertilizer is to look at the bottom of the leaves. If there are lots of little seed pods forming at the bottom, it probably needs fertilizer. Once the dirt is filled with enough compost to allow for good drainage and air circulation, scoop out the old leaves and soil away from the roots. Place the daylily seeds evenly on top of the new bed and water well.
Planting requirements for this beautiful tropical plant are perfect for most climates, even in the hottest and driest. It does not need much attention except to be moved every few weeks for watering. It is not affected by extreme temperatures and does not compete with other herbaceous plants for nutrients. In fact, it is one of the very few annuals that are considered to be weed-free, so the concern for weeds is nonexistent.
Most how to plant daylily seeds are sowed in the fall. They germinate in late winter or early spring. They start to produce flowers about two months after planting. After flowering, the flowers drop off and the seeds are planted into the soil to germinate. You should be able to see them within four to six weeks after planting.
Plant your seeds just as you would plant a traditional herb with full sun or partial shade. Full sun means that you need at least four hours of sunlight each day, but the southern states get six hours, while the north west and the Pacific Northwest tend to get three to four hours. Partial shade means that you need between two and four hours, but the west and the northern states might need less. Keep in mind that the seeds can not survive frost, so you might need to move them outdoors during the winter.
After planting, move the plants indoors when the weather starts to get cold. You will notice that the seed pods dry up and wilt. Put them back outdoors when the weather is warm. The flowers will bloom again, in time.
